Secondly,
I see a need for
better facilities & services for
Post-Graduate students.
Additional
facilities & services are coming!
The need for additional facilities has been recognized by the
university. Extra study space and new Post-Graduate commons room are
apparently in the pipeline in conjunction with the new building work
being done on the main campus.
In 2006, 2007, 2008?
While I'll be working hard to ensure that the
university expeditiously delivers on its promises, these won't be
available until 2006 at the earliest. So we're looking at a lag
time of at least a year, or may not until 2007, 2008...
2005: Lets improve
the existing facilities and services.
However there is still room for improvement with the existing
facilities and services that are currently provided to us. So for
this year I'll be focusing on identifying areas which need to be
fixed or upgraded.
Much of this will involve getting "little" annoyances and issues
addressed. Often its the "little things" which matter to people and
seem "more real" to them, because they are directly affected by the
problem rather than "bigger things" such as a lack of a
Post-Graduate common room. So addressing a whole lot of "little" issues
is likely to collectively add up towards lifting the quality of PG life
on campus.
For instance...
. The lighting in the PG
computer lab on the main campus needs upgrading.
The lighting
plan in the PG computer lab located in the basement of QB-block
needs some serious attention. Apart from the contributing to a gloomy
feel to the room, the poor of the lighting scheme is not likely to be
good for the health of student's eyes either. Therefore I will be
lobbying strongly to get an urgent upgrade to the lighting plan in this
room - and completed by the end of the semester.
. Post-Grad study room in the Atrium
needs redecorating.
Post-Grad's do have a study room on the
main campus. This is located next door to the ASA office in the Atrium
together with student lockers. But once again its aesthetics leave a
lot to be desired as an attractive place for PG's to use. Quite simply
it needs redecorating plus some decent lighting installed. Furthermore
the installation of some terminals and small printer wouldn't go amiss
either. Once again I will lobby the university to get the aesthetics in
this room upgraded.
. Catering services during the
weekend.
Wouldn't it be great to be able to get a decent cappacino or get lunch
at the campus during the weekends? If you go on campus during the
weekends, its quite surprising how many people are onsite either
attending block course, or studying in the library. Surely there
is good business going "begging here"? Apart from serving the needs of
students onsite during the weekend, having catering facilities
available in some form or the other would help draw some life back on
campus during the weekend.
. Extra study space: ideas
The study space issue is largely driven by the general pressure
on building space in general. However I don't believe getting extra
study space for PG students this year is a lost cause. It will instead
require a bit of creative thinking...
. Check the timetable for a list of
empty rooms...
For instance a check of the daily room schedule is bound to show up a
list of rooms that are empty during certain periods of the day. So its
quite likely there is quite a bit of study space available even if its
available for 1-2 hour periods of the day.
. Convert one of the basement
library study rooms into a PG
study
space.
May not be popular with under-grads but needs to be investigated
because these rooms are not used 100% of the time.
. Get a "couple of pre-fabs" put on
the main campus.
Would temporarily solve the study space issue with one of the buildings
perhaps serving as a Post-Grad common room. Unfortunately finding
locations that are close to the buildings are likely to be difficult.
